As far as I can remember, I was in my early teens back in 1990 when the song You Can't Touch This was huge and made MC Hammer a household name. It's not just about the song - which is utterly catchy and the word is repeatable (by that, I mean you can't touch this!) - but his outfit that create a huge hooplas in the entertainment scene. The massive pouffy harem pants which kinda secured MC Hammer as his signature memorable look.
Harem pants is definitely one of the traditional clothing if you go to some Arabian countries or part of Asia. It's the big. blowy, drop crotch 'upper' part with a cuffed bottom (sometimes very slim) which made the pants so iconic. Whether you wanna cringe or not, the pants is not only worn by the locals nowadays, but it seems to made its way into high fashion too. Everyone knows that YSL is famous for that after he debut the pants in the womenswear show back ages ago - by which Naomi Campbell is one of the biggest fan. In menswear, it seems to start catching up the trend and Tim Hamilton even did a couple of cropped harem pants in his FW09 collection. I like the fact that the pants looks very sporty rather than too MC Hammer-ish though.
Now, fancy yourself to copy the same look? The new 'Casuals' collection at Zara also stocked some harem sweatpants both in cropped and longer versions - just like the one in the lookbook. Isn't it looks cool rather than too tacky? And you can even pair it with a blazer to make it much edgier. Or, since it's a sweatpants wear it during your workout session instead of your normal track suit. =)
So. Harem pants - you can now touch those at Zara! :)
