I think cardigan is the most versatile piece of clothing as far as the top is concerned. You can look dress up or dress down, casual or formal, geek chic or even deviliciously edgy - depending on how you make your way with it. I have tons of cardi - in many colors, many texture, different sleeve lengths, and some of them in different designs - with patterns on it. I think it's not a waste to buy lots of cardi coz they're much more practical than a sweater though.
Now, why settle for the 'normal' cardi when you can get something much edgier version of it. Like this one by Michael Kors which is seen during the Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk back in New York last year. At a glance I thought, well... this is just a typical cardi with some contrast piping along the buttons. But boy, am I wrong coz it's actually not the white piping - but it's a zipper that cuts through all the way from the top to the bottom.
Zip it up, then you can do your geek chic look. But when you unzip it - voila! As if you got this skinny scarf worn around your neck. Isn't it edgilicious? I think this one will deff make any heads turn coz i's different than other cardi that you can find at your local H&M or Uniqlo. So... words to highstreet: a copy, please... =)
