Zara 'Young' Fall/Winter 2011 Ad Campaign

S
What's the different between Zara 'Young' and Zara 'Man' main line? It's more to the feel between the two. Zara Man is usually much sharper and got so many tailorings, while Zara Young is more towards casual and nonchalance, pretty laid back attitude. It's not necessarily for the younger generations, coz somehow anyone who are young at heart can alsways rock in Zara Young. Agree?

For Zara Young Fall/Winter 2011, I'm feeling quite nostalgic coz somehow the styling smells a bit of London. Anywise, there're some Blighty going on there : skinny silhouettes from the skinny jeans and the mod slim jacket, to the updo hair ala rock'n roll, and the wearing of those boots with the full ensemble - those look are a staple for most Londoners. Or at least, those whom you found in front of Topman Oxford Circus! Or at Whitechapel area and Spitalfields. I love the mix of sharp and casual pieces, giving a sense of great relaxed feel. It's the London look....!

Anyway, one piece that is to die for: THAT red leather jacket. Isn't it reminds me to the Balmain studded pin jacket worn by Arizona Muse in the previous Vogue March issue (but sans studs 'n pins)? One word: WANT!

Zara Fall/Winter 2011 Ad Campaign

S
I am the man of autumn. Well, at least that's what I discovered upon doing one fashion quiz recently. Though any quizzes shouldn't be taken seriously coz they're merely for fun, but I think there's some truth in it. I like autumn - apart from summer - coz the season is all about glamming up. It's such a sheer luxury to be in autumn season. Not only the color of nature around you exudes luxe itself, from golden brown to wild berry red to luscious dark chocolate and deep mustard - the clothes too indeed gives off that feeling as well.

How? Coz autumn is the time to don those long wool overcoat and the calves-high boots and wrap the snood around the neck - oh, it's so cool to be in autumn. I always feel glam when fall season arrives. Pure and sheer luxury to be wrapped like that....

Anyway. Talking about fall/winter, for this coming season Zara gives you the pure luxury feel without breaking your bank balance. The ad campaign featuring top model Sean O'Pry looks a bit different compared to previous Zara campaigns. The denim background appears rough, rustic and masculine, while the clothes manifested very polish and sharp styling; giving such a perfect juxtapose.

Shearling seems to reappear in term of overcoat and bomber jacket, proving that it's becoming a staple for at least another season. So as cable knit which always synonymous with cool weather. The color browns also dominate but branches out into coffee bean and terra cotta, instead of just camel in previous FW10. There's also deep teal - the Pantone Color for FW11/12. And I love the injection of colors like burnt orange which was similarly seen at Burberry FW11 early this year. There's some blue and red, which trying to take away the typical sombreness of autumn/winter.

Overall: great collection. I can't wait to see what's in store soon...

Btw, great news for our friend at Stateside coz Zara online store gonna make its debut in the US on September 7. Isn't that date is just after the release of the new iPhone5? Awesome.

The King's Speech

S
It's time for me to take the stage.

Public speaking has been my thing for quite some time. I never felt nervous whenever I have to speak in front of an audience. Give me a mic, then I'll do my thing. If there's no mic, I still can do my thing - though I have to scream a little bit to let this voice out. My involvement in public speaking is not new since I've been doing it when I was in the primary school. Being a Head Prefect then, it came so natural for me to be able to recite the speech in front of hundreds of students. In fact, I can recalled there's one time I have to reenact a scene in a play for the sake of 'giving the audience a taste' of what's coming for the interschool drama competition that I've involved in.

And then things rolled from there, as I've frequently being in the public eye not just in the secondary school, but also at Uni. From being in the school debate team (both Malay and English!), to being a deejay - talking in front of public is something I yearned for. When it comes to the career world, it's my nature of work to speak in front of the audience coz I teach. Nonetheless, I think lots of people at my uni also known me as the emcee since I've been emceeing in so many high profile events, both internal and externally. One time I remembered I shared a stage with the former PM - Tun Mahathir - in an event attended by not less than 3000 people. It was quite daunting, since only me and him in front of thousands, but I kinda find my calm in handling things down. (you have no idea how my knees shiver!!)

Last week I decided to take the centre stage and give a speech in the event that I'm chairing. Normally, I don't wanna be in the spotlight when it comes to the students' activities, where I just let the Project Director to do his things instead. But given the fact that the event has been rebranded and with many things going on, as well as receiving so many questions by my colleagues on 'why the need to change the name??' thing - I decided that my speech could explain just that.

It took me a couple of days to think about the concept of my speech, yet when it comes to really pen it down, the text is done within just 10 minutes. I presumed every points that's been swirling in my head has been let out into those paragraphs. The result - a four-pages manuscript for about 10-mins period. Not that bad I guess.

There was about 300 people in the audience including the Vice Chancellor and the Deputy VC + participants and guests (quite a low key ceremony). I think everything went smoothly. But what surprised me when I return to my seat, the DVC reached me out, and shook my hand saying 'that's a good speech! give me one copy!'. I'm quite stunned but delighted nonetheless. Yet, what is even surprise me is when the event is over and we walked out from the hall : lots of people complimented me how great the speech was. I was quite bemused really since I think what I wrote is just simple things.

Btw, I think that's what happen if you give a blogger a chance to recite a speech - he/she will rock it, definitely! :)

Anyway, in case you're wondering what's in the speech, well, here is some of the excerpts. Some part here and there I picked from the four-pages manuscripts I wrote. Pretty simple and easy to understand. Just like this blog too! Since the event is about the design exhibition, having being involved in it myself for more than 7 years (as a judge and 'observer'), plus me myself have won four design awards previously; I think I pretty much know what I'm talking about. =)

YBhg Datuk, Ladies and Gentlemen
To me, the essence of design begins with the basic principle, which is simplicity. As Leonardo da Vinci used to say, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Because at the end of the day, you want is a product that is simple to be used, or simple to operate. However, to achieve that simplicity, is not that easy because one must understand the concept of balance. A designer need to strike a balance in any aspect of his/her design methodology. In fact, science is all about balance. Engineering is also about balance. We talk about the balance of electron in the atomic orbital that calls for its stability. We talk about balance in a chemical reaction equation for it to reach equilibrium. We talk about balance in the First Law of Thermodynamics. We talk about balance when dealing with the conservation of mass, energy, and force. Indeed the concept of balance in Science and Engineering is highly emphasized.
In design, a designer has to balance between the engineering & technical aspects with the aesthetics of the product; its functionality with its ease of use. A balance between its economic contributions with the environmental impact. A balance between its practicalities with its sustainability. It’s really about the balance. In fact, it is in line with ______ Brand Essence itself – Energy Receives, Energy Returns – which indeed emphasizing on the concept of balance.

YBhg Datuk, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am also delighted to share with you that we have reintroduce the category for the primary and secondary schools. In order to extend the innovative culture to the surrounding community, the Organizing Committee which is through our Science Ambassadors, has coordinated a ‘Reach-Out Program’ to the school students within the vicinity of the campus in order to get their involvement in the creative and innovative activities.  This is also aligned with the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) of the University, and also the Prime Minister’s vision to develop and implement strategies to stimulate and support innovation in Malaysia. It is hoped that through this activity, we will help to support sustainable innovation to both develop and galvanize Malaysian future entrepreneurs and innovators.

I would like to encourage you to visit all booths to really notice how creative and innovative our generations are. I also would like to point that last semester, the booths arrangement is designed like a herringbone structure – a symbolic meaning to the ‘moving forward’ of this event. In ____, the booths are designed like a star shape*, which epitomises that ‘a new star’ is born. It also reflects the star in the Malaysian flag – our homage to the month of August, the month of Malaysia's Independence.
Last but not least, to the participants, I’m wishing you all the best. May this event be your first stepping stone in sustaining the innovative culture in your life. While you are having a good time showcasing your researches and innovations, please do not forget to protect your ideas. Your intellectual property is indeed worth more than you could think of!"
See, how simple the speech was. I dunno how it touches the audience hearts? Hmmm...

I'm wearing River Island slimfit suit in graphite + taupe Asos shirt + stripe knitted tie from Uniqlo + Jimmy Choo boots.
* fyi, when the event is held last April, the real reason why I chose the herringbone structure is to reflect the tweed fabric since April is the end of Winter, and tweed is always a fabric of choice for that season. For the recent one in August, lots of designers do 'star', eg. Dolce & Gabbana. Don't believe me, then look at what Beyonce wear in InStyle and Freja Beha in Vogue's covers for September issues!

Raya 2011 : Time to Bring the Bling

S
Eid is gonna be another 8 to 9 days more, depending on how the moon forecast going to be. I think everyone around the world has now pumped up their preparation for the big day as this is the final week fasting - from searching for the ensembles to wear, the shoes, the songkok, to making the the delicacies, prep for the home decor, etc...etc.

This year, I dunno whether I'm feeling excited or not coz I kinda miss the simple way of celebrating Eid in London for the past 4 years without the hassle to think about new clothes and everything. Not even kuih raya or baju raya which to me quite a blessing; no waste of money. To me it's not where you celebrate it or with whom you celebrate it with - but the most important is how you celebrate the month of Syawal. The happiness really relies inside you since only you and only you can define whether the way you celebrate Eid is the one that you long for. If you think that celebrating Eid with your family is what makes you happy, by all means do it. If not... then find an alternative way. After all these years, I think you can throw me anywhere in the world, with whoever I'm with to be festive on that big day; it doesn't matter coz being happy is actually a state of mind.

Anyway, regardless of what I'm saying; this year I'm celebrating Eid in this very country with its multiracial and multicultural citizen. Since I've been told I'm partly mix-brood myself (I'm Malay, with a hint of Indian and Thai-blood) I wanted to channel my minor Indian ethnicity in myself. Hence I've decided to wear the Indian costume as what I've also wore in my previous Eids before. And voila... I got a perfect ensemble to do just that. This is the hint of how the clothes gonna be - it's a fully embroidered-front churidar kurta that's a true bling bling. When I found it at a store in Little India in Ipoh, I knew it right through that it's gonna be mine. The fit is perfect, the fabric is very light and breathable which suits the weather and the most important the design is awesome. Very edgy, quite a modern take, it has buttons on the fronts with a neo-Nehru collar, a very high slits on the sides which give a hint of sexiness. It's fully made in Mumbai, India (Bollywood, beb!) and hand-picked by the shopowner herself. I am quite stunned coz the shopowner really knew my size just by looking at me without asking.

"This is your size, and I have this one special just for you - the only one in the shop" she said, which made me more excited.

So there - I'm hoping the bling could lift my mood this Eid. Aminnn....

Oh, to go with that I'm thinking of pairing it with the studded shoes from H&M. Kinda suit the bling theme of the year! Since the shoes is quite slim itself, it would be perfect with the slim-leg of my trousers.

Mentioning Little India in Ipoh, I've just learned something which made me so happily surprised. During my quest of finding the ensemble, I hopped on to many stores before. One of it sells not only the kurta or jippa, but also sells hoards of beautiful fabrics too which is straight came from Mumbai. You can choose the fabric and they'll made it for you that very time. You can also customize it as you with, with embellishment, with border on the sleeves and the lower hem, the type of collar etc..etc. And the surprising part when the salesgirl told me "it will be completed in one hour".

One hour?? Are you kidding me? That's manic, but surprisingly good news especially for always busy people like me who always want things very fast. It's awesome! (now I know how Primark London really stocks their products in store very quickly, coz their labour are from India!)

Oh, fyi. Little India has so many gorgeous saris too... and rumor has it former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra and some other Bollywood actresses also shop there before! Whaat..?

Jaybird Sportsband Bluetooth Headphone

S
Earphone cords, I hate 'em! It's always the same thing happen whenever I slipped that typical earphones into my iPhone or iPod to listen to the music. Not only they got tangled which takes time to really get it resolved and such a time-waster - the worst part it always stuck either between my knee when I bent over during exercise or it stuck at the end of the kitchen cabinet handle whenever I try to open/close the door. I dunno how many earphones have got damaged and I have to buy new ones due to the internal wires defect caused by it. Not to mention, if I wanna move around the house while listening to the music, there's no way I can charge the phone at the same time!

So, the quest to find a wireless earphone begins. If previous years I've been having that Philips cordless headphone, that stuff however poses one disadvantage coz it has to be connected to an infra-red receiver, which is then be connected again to a power source. And I have to again fill in two AAA batteries to the headphone to futher power it. What a double triple troublesome. I need something much simpler, coz as usual simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, says Da Vinci. (Da Vinci as in Da Vinci the man, not the code!)

But voila! Thank goodness I found this gadget by Jaybird. Codename: Sportsband SB1 Bluetooth headphone, this one really solve lots of problem. Not only it's cordless (by which it connects via bluetooth), it looks so very cool too. Kinda has that retro vibes to it.

It's very simple to use. On the right there're control buttons like power on/off, forward, reverse, volume up/down. To connect you just need to hold on to the power button in the middle for 6 seconds, and the blue light blinks whereby it'll search for any available bluetooth devices to be connected with. For my iPhone, all I I have to do is by going to the Settings menu, and click on the Bluetooth - as within seconds it connects so swiftly.

On the left side of the headphone is quite similar control buttons - but they're all dummies coz they can't be used. However, the designer is brilliant as he try to balance it in term of its design.

At the bottom, there're two holes - the smaller one for the mic and bigger hole for the power source which connects to a USB port for charging. There's no battery required for it to function since internally there's a rechargable battery (which I don't know where it's located) making things even better. And the device also act as a wireless headset, therefore whenever there's any calls you can use the headphone to answer without having to pick up the phone itself.

Function wise, the headphone can take up the signal up to 10 meters (which is according to the manual). But the best thing, it cuts through the walls too to a certain level. Since my house is a two-storey, I try to leave my phone downstairs and tested whether I can still listen to the music when I went upstairs. Surprisingly I can! How brilliant, though at times the sound breaks down at some intervals especially if I entered the room with the door closed , hence the signal became weak. Anyhow, it really does what it says on the box - wireless!

Sound wise, to me it's okay since I'm not that particular on the bass or treble thing. It sounds good coz it's not too bassy nor it squeals like some cheap headphones. The sound has great balance.

The battery life? I didn't really check coz I don't use it the whole day. With a full charge, I'm guessing probably it'll last about 12-15 hours? Which is not too bad after all... When the battery is about to run out, there'll be some 'beep' to warn you, and it'll keep going at some intervals until it stops functioning. It is when you really know you need to connect to the cord provided.

So far, I'm happy with it coz it's truly cordless. No need to mess with any wires and stuff. Very simple to use, very easy to operate, very light and truly mobile, and looks quite good in its glossy finish. They come in many color choices like blue, white, red... so its up to you which color you desire.

Chunky Soles for the Funky Souls (Again)

S
The invasion of the chunky soles continues. We all have to blame Prada really coz they're the one who started the thick undersole madness in the fashion world. Now that they came up with a new collection for this coming fall/winter 2011 in black and brown versions of the the creepers, everyone too seems to join in the bandwagon as well. If in the previous post I've mention about Burberry's chunky soles - now it's time to take it to the highstreet as Topman offers you their take on the height-elevation footwear.

Collaborating with the famous shoe brand, Loake; Topman brought edgy shoes for you to choose. From derby to fringe loafers and boots, they look quite similar to the Burberrys' - with white undersoles - which seem to raise the question, is this one way of copying the look? Whatever the answer is, the price tags are much dearer to the wallet compared to the designer labels coz that's what highstreet is all about.

With the look and all, I think by giving that dash of chunky soles is one effort to pump up the typical classic Loake in the market. Don't you think?
