Gucci 'Horsebit' Sandals

S
Some just generically call it sandals. Others specifically named it thongs. But to most local people here, this kind of footwear is called capal (pronounced char-parl).

I still remember the first capal that I have when my mum bought one during my participation in the school drama when I was about 10 or 11 years old. That's ages ago. Me and the other two kids were representing our primary school in a competition at the regional level. The scene of the story is circulating around the Singapura Dilanggar Todak - which is a folk tale of yesteryears when Temasek (old name for Singapore) is being hit by a swarm of swordfish on the shoreline. It's an interesting story to learn that being uneducated, people that time uses their own legs as a barrier not letting the fish getting into the mainland - and lots of people killed too due to that. The event has finally being saved by a boy named Hang Nadim by whom suggested to the man-of-title or Bangsawan to use banana tree trunks planted on the shoreline so that the fish would stick to it upon hitting the beach, thus saving lots of lives. And it works. But feeling challenged and shrouded by jealousy and scare that the boy would one day assume the job as a ruler of the country, the Bangsawan has asked the boy to be murdered insted of giving him reward. And there he goes - he's been killed from a stab o a kris. Kinda sad and stupid, isn't it?

What is my role in the drama? I'm the villain. The Bangsawan. (cue evil laugh, please...). I can still recall my mum made me a blue Baju Melayu which is quite big that it ballooned up when I wear it. She made it in 3 days, unfortunately! To complete the look, there's a black capal that my mum bought a day before. It rocks. I think when it comes to the best-dressed team, my team would definitely win coz the other groups just wear their school uniform!

And I remember my signature line "Hey budak kecil, kamu ni siapa nak campur kerja orang tua, hah?" in a high pitch, screaming angrily while pointing my finger to the boy. And the audience would go whoa..!. (translation: hey, little kid. who're you wanna mind the elder's business, huh?). Did my team win? Nope. We got 2nd place coz the winner is the hosting school. Not fair!

Anyway. The capal. If I can redo the scenes in all its glory again, I'll definitely do it in style. Wearing these capal by Gucci. So much so, it does resemble the one that I wore that time. But this one has flat soles rather than with heel like my previous. What I like about this simple sandal is the signature Gucci 'horsebit' hardware which add a bit of flair to its Italian heritage. Love the color in choc brown leather that looks delicious when you slip your feet in.

Will I rock in this if I play the Bangsawan role again? Absolutely. But, not to the beach to see those swordfish... coz leather and water never a good friend! :)
